One of the most common questions we hear — often from people calling before making the trip — is some version of: "I have a couple of pounds of copper wire and some aluminum cans. Is it worth coming in?" The honest answer is that it depends on what you have, how far you are driving, and what your time is worth. Here is the math so you can decide for yourself.

The Basic Calculation

The value of any scrap load is weight times price per pound. A small load is only worth the trip if the cash payout exceeds the cost of the trip (fuel, time, and wear on your vehicle) by enough to make it worthwhile.

The Breakeven Point by Distance

If you are in Ardmore and already driving past our yard on Bussell Ridge Rd, almost any load is worth stopping for — even a bag of aluminum cans makes sense if you are already there. The math changes with distance.

• Within 10 miles of Ardmore: Non-ferrous metal (copper, aluminum, brass) is almost always worth the trip, even in small quantities. Iron is worth bringing if you have a truck bed worth — but 20 lbs of iron alone probably is not.
