How to Scrap a Junk Car in Oklahoma: Step-by-Step

A junk car sitting in your yard or driveway is not just an eyesore — it is money. Even a vehicle that does not run, has body damage, or is missing major components has value as scrap metal. In Oklahoma, the process of scrapping a vehicle is straightforward if you know the steps, and the payout at the scale is often more than people expect.

This guide covers everything you need to scrap a vehicle in Oklahoma — from title requirements to what to remove before you bring it in.

Step 1: Find the Title

This is the single most important step. In Oklahoma, you cannot legally sell a vehicle for scrap without a clear title in your name. Scrap yards are required by state law to verify ownership before accepting a vehicle.

• If you have the title: Sign the back of the title over to the buyer (the scrap yard). Bring it with you when you bring the vehicle.
• If you do not have the title: Contact the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) to request a duplicate title. There is a small fee and it typically takes 10 to 15 business days. You can also apply in person at your local tag agent for faster processing.

Step 2: Cancel Your Insurance and Remove Your Plates

Before scrapping the vehicle, call your insurance company and cancel the policy. You will typically receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of your premium. Also remove the license plates — in Oklahoma, plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. You can either transfer them to another vehicle or surrender them to avoid continued registration fees.

Step 3: Remove Valuable Components First

The scrap yard pays for weight and metal content. Components that have more value sold separately should come off before the vehicle goes to the scale:

• Catalytic converter — catalytic converters contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium and are priced separately from the vehicle. Some yards pay separately for them; others factor them into the vehicle rate. Ask specifically about your catalytic converter.
• Battery — car batteries are bought as a separate category at most yards. Remove it and bring it in separately if you want to ensure you receive the battery credit.

• Copper wire harness — for the mechanically inclined, the main engine wiring harness on most vehicles contains meaningful amounts of copper wire. This is an advanced step, but on older full-size trucks it can be worth the effort.

Step 4: Drain Fluids
